Volume levels on portable music players being questioned by European Union

The volume level on iPods or other music players, and the damage it can do to hearing, has caught the attention of European regulators.

The European Union has said that it is time to limit the noise levels and force manufacturers to include warnings after finding top volumes on music players are damaging and will lead to more hearing loss among young people.

According to Health Canada, if someone listening to a music player cannot hear someone a metre away unless they shout, the volume is at a dangerous level.

The European Union said that it will draft new technical standards to limit the volume of mobile music players.

The proposed standards, announced Monday, would see new players include a maximum sound level default at 80 decibels.

What do you think?  Should we do this in Canada?
